Patrick Baxter

Furniture handmade by trained cabinetmaker Patrick Baxter is engineered and built to last, making use of tried and tested traditional cabinetmaking construction techniques. Fine hand cut dovetails and other joints are often made a feature of rather than hidden away.

The raw material - Scottish grown hardwoods such as ash, elm, walnut & cherry, is also an important factor in each piece. Patrick's love of timber shows through in its careful selection.

All the timber comes from locally sourced trees which are cut and dried on the premises, special care being taken to ensure the wood is stable in its home environment.

Patrick has been established at Girdwoodend since 1991 and welcomes visitors to the premises. For most commissions be prepared to wait from 3 to 12 months, although there are often pieces, such as coffee tables, ready to buy at the workshops.

Marilyn Caddell

Marilyn learnt to spin in 1976 and very soon became interested in the use of natural dyes to colour her yarn.  She believes that the lovely range of soft colours obtained from plant material - flower heads, leaves, nuts, bark, berries, etc. - are so much nicer than the harsher commercial dyes. Marilyn is now also using using certain species of fungi as a source of dye pigment. She has been developing this craft, learning from specialists in California and Scandanavia, over the last few years. With fungi dyes, the whole colour spectrum is possible. The waistcoat shown here was embroidered with yarns, some handspun and some commercial, that were dyed with Cortinarius mushrooms, which grow under fir trees
