Tom Bryan

Tom Bryan was born in Canada in 1950, but has been long resident in Scotland, his mother’s country. He is a widely published and broadcast poet, fiction and non-fiction writer. Writer-in-Residence in Aberdeenshire, Scottish Borders, and currently, Brownsbank Writing Fellow. Has edited three literary magazines and was the founder of “The Eildon Tree”. Has edited anthologies as well.

To date, three published collections of poetry, three non-fiction books, a small book of short stories and a novel, with work appearing regularly in small presses and anthologies. Plays a bit of harmonica and writes songs and has also had a dramatic piece about Thomas the Rhymer performed in the Borders, the Highlands and the State Theatre in Tula, Russia. Has two grown children, lives in Kelso with his partner, Lis Lee, also a playwright and poet. Works throughout South Lanarkshire from his working base at Brownsbank Cottage

William-John Deerin

William-John Deerin has lived in Lanarkshire most of his life. His first two poems were published in the Asphalt Garden on a double spread next to a story by James Kelman. An auspicious start but followed by other poems disappearing in obscure and short lived magazines. A number of poems were included in the anthology Mistaken Identities. William-John designed and edited the anthology ‘Stepping into the Avalanche’ writing the preface and introductions to the contributors. A volume of his own poetry entitled ‘A Starling’s Eye’ was published in 2005.

Aline Dobbie

Aline Dobbie is of Scottish ancestry and was born in India to parents serving in the Indian army. She came home to be educated in Scotland. She and her husband spent time in South Africa, returning with their two sons to live just outside Biggar. She has written two books on travel - 'India: The Peacock's Call' and 'India: The Tiger's Roar' and she plans a third to make it a trilogy on India.

Aline is also a photographer and has produced DVDs of her photographos of India and of Scotland. The latter is set to the music of clarsach player Savourna Stevenson.

Margaret Dunlop

Margaret, perhaps better known locally by her married name Margaret Wiener has lived in South Lanarkshire for around 40 years. Her first book, 'Marching in Scotland, Dancing in New York', was published in August 2007. She now lives in Biggar.

Vicki Feaver

Vicki Feaver moved to Lanarkshire from West Sussex where she was a professor at Chichester University. She now lives in Dunsyre. with her husband and dog. She has published two collections of poetry, Close Relatives (Secker 1981) and The Handless Maiden (Cape 1994) which won a Heinemann Prize and was short-listed for the Forward Prize. A third collection, The Book of Blood, is due from Cape in April 2006. She has received an Arts Council Award and a Cholmondeley Award for her poetry. She is a member of the Dophinton Writers Group.

Matthew Fitt

Matthew was the second holder of the Brownsbank Fellowship and writer-in-residence in Greater Pollock in Glasgow. A poet and novelist, his Scots SF novel But n Ben a-Go-Go was published in 2000 followed by his first poetry collection, Kate o' Shanter's Tale and Other Poems, in 2003. He is currently Schools Officer for the successful scots language imprint, Itchy Coo.

Fiona Gibson

Fiona Gibson writes for many publications including the Observer, Red magazine and the Sunday Herald, where she has contributed a weekly column for the past four years. She has written two novels, Babyface and Wonderboy, both published by Flame. The Fish Finger Years, her book about the messy realities of child-rearing, is published by Hodder & Stoughton.

Fiona lives in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, with her husband and three young children.

Carol McKay

Carol McKay worked for several years as a creative writing tutor in North and South Lanarkshire (including Hieton Writers' Group) but is now working as a specialist tutor on the Open University's new short course 'Start Writing Fiction'.

Her stories and poems have been published in a variety of literary magazines. In 2002 her story 'Unrestricted' was short-listed for the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday Short Story Competition and published in the anthology Shorts 5, by Polygon. Most recently her poem 'Transience' was published in the innovative anthology 'The Knuckle End'. She lives in Hamilton with her husband and three of her four daughters.

Aonghas MacNeacail Scottish Writer of the Year 1997, Aonghas MacNeacail is a poet in Gaelic and English and songwriter in both folk and classical idioms, journalist, broadcaster, translator and occasional actor. Poetry has taken him to North America, Japan, Rome, Jerusalem, Berlin, St Petersburg, and Ireland frequently, among many other international destinations.
